Afternoon
WorkshopsDirectors’ Track - How To Use A Care Plan: A Nuts & Bolts Workshop - Elaine Donoghue, MD, Division Chief, General Pediatrics at Jersey Shore Univ Medical Center, Dianne Burdette, Child Care Health Consultant, Denise Sellers, Child Care Director
Incorporating children with special health care needs into child care can be a challenge. Multiple issues need to be addressed including accommodations, staff training, medications and emergency plans. Good communication with the health care provider is critical. This workshop will review what a care plan is, why it is necessary, what types of children may need one, strategies for implementing a care plan at a child care site and the roles of the partners involved with creating and implementing a care plan.
Using Positive Guidance to Work with Challenging Behaviors in Young Children - Michele Granger, M.Ed.
This workshop will give you the skills to enable you to positively guide children with challenging behaviors. Learn to think preventively and to focus on recognizing and teaching appropriate behavior. Brainstorm with fellow teachers and child care providers to find solutions to problems that commonly occur in early childhood classrooms. Leave with practical tools you can start using Monday morning.
Help! What Do I Need To Know? - Sue Gottesman, Esq. & Jane Voorhees
Who do I turn to when a child with special needs would like to attend my child care program? What are my rights and responsibilities to the family and to my business? At this workshop you will be introduced to the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and the resources that are available to guide your decisions.
Building Partnerships with Families: Sharing Sensitive Information - Sue Gellert, M.A.
This workshop will explore the vital importance of relationships in our work with families and children. We will examine how our own beliefs, values, and attitudes can directly influence how we address sensitive issues that arise, such as sharing concerns about a child’s development. Using case scenarios, we will address common challenges and provide practical solutions.
Rose Annussek Award
The MAP to Inclusive Child Care Team is pleased to announce the creation of the Rose Annussek Award, to be presented annually in memory of our dear colleague. Rose was a founding member of the MAP team and served faithfully until her illness last year.
Rose Annussek provided unwavering support for the neediest children in New Jersey served by Head Start programs for over 30 years. A well respected spokesperson for the issues of very young children with disabilities and their families, Rose had been a gentle voice that stood firm for the children of New Jersey.
In memory of Rose’s calm, resilient spirit and the enduring impression of her years of dedicated service, the MAP Team has decided to honor her memory with an annual award for inclusive child care programs which strive to follow her vision. Since Rose was so personally involved with Head Start programs during her career, we have decided to target a Head Start program for the first award.
This year the award will be presented at the New Jersey Inclusive Child Care Conference.
