Letter to the Editor - Governor's Proclamation - 11/03

11/2/03

To the Editor,

Each year, National Family Caregivers Association has been privileged to receive a proclamation for NJ from Governors Whitman, DiFrancesco, and McGreevey for Family Caregivers month in November, chosen due to Thanksgiving.  I am the parent of a special needs child (kidney disease/autism) and volunteer as the NJ Caregiver Community Action Network representative for National Family Caregivers.  My daughter and I were honored one year to be presented with the proclamation in person by the Commissioner of the N.J. Dept. of Health and Senior Services, on behalf of the Governor.  I am also proud to say that N.J. was the pilot state for free family memberships.  I remembered that my family was unable to join any organizations with membership fees due to my daughter’s extensive medical bills, and I asked the national office to consider this for all families (although NFCA always sponsored families in need).  Family memberships are now free nationally.  Parents of special children, “well-spouses”, those involved in elder care, and any other family caregivers can get the free information/support they need from NFCA by calling (800) 896-3650 or from the website at www.nfcacares.org .  This year the governor’s proclamation reads as follows (see attached)

Sincerely,

Lauren Agoratus-caregiver
