Early identification of autism
On March 30, 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report showing that an estimated 1 in 88 children in the United States, and 1 in 49 children in New Jersey, are identified as having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by age 8.  The numbers are even higher for boys, with an estimated 1 in 54 boys identified as being on the spectrum, as well as for Hispanic and African-American children.  Overall, this represents a 23 percent increase over the previous estimates of 1 in 110 children from the last study in 2009.  The report, Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders – Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, 14 Sites, United States, 2008, provides estimates from 14 selected sites, including New Jersey.  The report was published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss6103a1.htm?s_cid=ss6103a1_w .
