Mahwah Parent Group
All children are unique and have a variety of learning styles. Frustration can develop in children and their families when this learning style difference is misunderstood. Our group focuses on enhancing a parent's understanding of the various ways to help children become successful by not only addressing their weaknesses but also highlighting their strengths. Through the use of current resources that are available, we can help our children understand their learning styles and help them to advocate for themselves. This will enable our children to be more confident to approach all their academic tasks in the future. During the year we plan to have a diverse group of speakers, video presentations and literature that will provide parents with information on a variety of topics. Our group supports all parents whose children are in district as well as out of district, Pre-K – 12. All parents, teachers and Mahwah High School students are welcome to attend these meetings.

Montclair Special Education Parent Advisory Council
The Parent Advisory Council’s (PAC) goals are to improve the
instructional process for children classified for Special Education and Related
Services, and to promote the inclusion of children with special needs with the
necessary supports within their schools and the community at large. We encourage
following “best practices” in the identification and evaluation of students with
special needs and in the provision of special education services. The PAC seeks
to keep parents informed and involved in their children’s education by providing
an arena to address policy issues and problems related to their children’s
education; by providing topical workshops that address identified problems and
by encouraging innovative educational practices. We welcome community members
and professionals to participate, to share information about innovative programs
or techniques they are using, and to raise issues or problems for the PAC to
address.

JEA Whippany, NJ
The Jewish Education Association Center for Special Education offers two monthly, support groups that are free to the community. These groups provide emotional support for members as well as information regarding how to work as a team member with your school district, and how to advocate for your child's needs in the community. Members also share resources such as doctors and therapists.
Both groups are facilitated by Dr. Daniel Gallagher, a clinical psychologist who also has a private practice in Maplewood, NJ. Dan has been a consultant to the JEA for over seven years.
Group B is for parents of children with learning/behavioral issues including autism and Asperger Syndrome and meets monthly from 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon at the Jewish Education Association, Seminar Room 2, 901 Route 10 East, Whippany, NJ. This group has been in existence for over three years. The meetings are scheduled month-to-month at each meeting by those in attendance.
Interested persons may contact me and I will put them on an e-mail contact list and/or mailing list. They are contacted each month with the next meeting date.

Rutgers Community Christian
Church Parent Support Group for Parents of Autistic Children (RCCCPSG)
Somerset, Somerset, NJ 08873
Target group: Chinese parents with autistic children
Chinlin Fong, 732-868-6736
Mission of RCCCPSG: Raising an autistic child is a life-long challenge. For many Chinese parents of autistic child(ren) in the US, this challenge is intensified by the language and cultural barriers which make it impossible to properly assert the rights and needs of an autistic child.
Rutgers Community Christian Church Parent Support Group (RCCCPSG) was founded in April of 2001 by a Chinese parent of autistic children to assist parents functionally and emotionally. Through advocacy training and information exchange, RCCCPSG hopes to help autistic children receive appropriate and timely services from the state and from their local school districts. Through mutual support, RCCCPSG strives to enable the family with autistic children to rise above the challenge and live productive and meaningful lives.

We are the Young Adults group for ages 18 and up - who have Asperger Syndrome. Other young people with high functioning autism, or PDD may also be comfortable in our group. The main purpose of the group will be socializing. We meet once a month for a support-type group where we will get to know one another and talk about the challenges of our jobs or college classes, learning to deal with co-workers, and finding friends when school is over. We would also like to meet one other night each month to go to a movie, out to dinner, bowling or any other activities that group members are interested in. We have tentatively arranged to meet at Health Quest in Flemington. We have reserved a room for late Sunday afternoons. We would meet for two hours from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Parents would be welcome to meet with one another at the same time. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining our group please e-mail me or call me.

YAHOO! GROUPS
Q. What is a “Yahoo! Group?”
A. Yahoo! Groups operate as both electronic mailing lists and Internet forums. Group messages can be posted and read by e-mail or on the Group homepage, like a web forum. Members can choose whether to receive individual e-mails or daily digest e-mails, or to read the posts at the web site. Some Groups are simply announcement lists, to which only the Group moderators can post, while others are discussion lists.
