Health Help for "Non-Parents" Raising Children

In New Jersey, 127,263 children (6.1% of all NJ children) live in households headed by their grandparents & another 44,132 (2.1% of all NJ children) live in households headed by other relatives

58,789 grandparents are solely responsible for raising their grandchildren (38% African-American, 34% White, 20% Latino, and 4% Asian)

In NJ, 10,607 children live in out-of-home placements under DYFS supervision

Approximately 1,911 (18%) of these children live in relative/family foster homes (kinship care)

The majority of the remainder of placements are with foster families

NJ children are often eligible for state & federal benefits even if their caregivers do not have legal guardianship or custody, including health insurance

"Non-parents" may apply for free or low-cost health insurance for the children they are raising through Medicaid & NJ Family Care
