Mental Set
Mental set has the largest effect size on decreasing disruptive behavior and it's made of "Withitness" and "Emotional Objectivity". 1
1. "Withitness" has the greatest impact on preventing and addressing disruptive behavior, and it can be taught. "Withitness" includes being aware of what's going on in all parts of the classroom at all times, by continuously scanning the classroom, intervening promptly and accurately to reinforce pro social behavior, mentally reviewing when and where challenging behavior may occur with certain students, and taking proactive steps to prevent them from occurring &/or escalating. 2
2. Maintaining emotional objectivity requires the teacher to avoid emotional extremes when dealing with a particular student &/or challenging behavior. Memorializing contingencies in classroom rules and procedures, as well as behavioral contracts can assist in this endeavor. 3
