Administrative Involvement in Preventing & Address Challenging Student Behavior

Educational administrators in districts and schools have a tremendous responsibility to prevent and address challenging behavior. Hopefully, the resources in this web page, which are also hyperlinked below, will provide administrators with the guidance and support they need to ensure:

1. The district has written policies and procedures, which are consistently implemented. to provide student support services, as mandated by New Jersey's Regulations;

2. Adherence to IDEA's legal mandates;

3. The district's discipline policy is known by all stakeholders and consistently enforced;

4. Schoolwide positive behavioral supports are utilized;

5. Teaching and learning activities address New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards that correspond to social and emotional issues;

6.  Staff development is provided on effective classroom management; and

7. When an individual student engages in challenging behavior, consider:

    a. Parent involvement

    b. Student involvement

    c. Conducting a functional behavioral assessments (FBA)

    d. Developing a Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) or Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS)
