Empowering families
does not mean
giving or bestowing
power on families -
the power is there
by right.

As families, we
recognize our
strengths and
abilities. It is
through our
advocacy that we
become effective
partners and
agents for change.

SPAN Satisfaction Survey

The Education Law Center continues to litigate the case of
Disability Rights New Jersey v. New Jersey Department of Education which seeks to ensure that students with disabilities in New Jersey are educated in the "least restrictive environment." Pursuant to a Court Order in the case, ELC is posting a "Notice of Disclosure of Student Records" in English and Spanish to allow ELC and its co-plaintiffs -- Disability Rights New Jersey, The ARC of New Jersey and the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network --
to obtain relevant documents.

Family Crisis Handbook

A comprehensive overview of what to expect, where to turn for assistance, and how to navigate the system in New Jersey, developed by Donna Icovino, a family advocate and Co-chair of the NJ Dual Diagnosis Task Force, and Lucille Esralew of Trinitas Regional Medical Center, with input from Diana Autin and Lauren Agoratus from SPAN.

URGENT: SPAN is working with the NJ Special Education Leadership Council and NJ TASH to end the abuse of students with disabilities in NJ through the continued use of aversives, restraints, and seclusion. To that end, we are collecting stories of families whose children have faced aversives, restraints, and/or seclusion. Please forward your story and let us know if you are willing to testify should public hearings be held. Send your information to diana.autin@spannj.org and copy pkinsell@spannj.org and martha.brecher@spannj.org. Thanks so much!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
BE A SPAN RESOURCE PARENT!!

SPAN Resource Parents (SRPs) volunteer to assist parents of children with disabilities to know their rights and responsibilities under the law and how to address questions or concerns about their child’s education and development. A 30-hour training on the federal and state early intervention laws; special education laws; and best practices in serving children with developmental delays and disabilities and on-going support help to prepare you for this important role.
